| Digital Video Recorder |
Replaces Time Lapse Recorder (VCR Tape Technology)
with computer-based hard disc as recording media for Video Surveillance
cameras. |
| Advantages: |
Does not require labor of frequent
changing of tapes and space for their storage. |
Allows random access to specific time
frame periods, instead of taking time to spool tape to
specific portion of tape. |
Does not require "maintenance"
of replacing worn tapes. |
Allows long periods on single media. |
Does not "wear out" (require
maintenance) to extent of Time Lapse Recorder, which has
more moving parts. |
| Disadvantages: |
Slightly higher device cost. |
Data of interest must be downloaded to another
media if a media must be provided to others. |
| Future Outlook: |
More efficient data compression techniques
in future will allow more data to be stored on current sized
media. |
Lager hard disks will allow more data storage
(cover longer periods of time), even though current disk sizes
allow up to weeks of storage now. |
As cost comes down, Digital Video Recorder
will replace Time Lapse Recorders, particularly on new installations. |
